HOW IT WORKS

WHAT ARE THE BENEFITS?

The Lactate Threshold test is done to determine the point during exercise of increasing intensity at which lactate production exceeds lactate clearance. Endurance performance relies on your ability to perform for extended periods at the highest possible intensity without experiencing the effects of fatigue and lactate accumulation. Determining the point at which you can train before experiencing lactate accumulation will allow you to improve this threshold with training.

For  active individuals  and athletes, lactate threshold assessments are a vital tool for training and  performance. Lactate threshold testing allows direct measurement of lactate levels (via blood draws/finger pricks during exercise). This information can be used to improve future workouts by determining when your body relies more heavily on fats or carbohydrates while exercising.

WHAT RESULTS WILL I RECEIVE?

A Certified Exercise Physiologist will review your results. You will receive online access to your results (test results with interpretation) within one business day.

WHAT IS THE TEST PROTOCOL?

Prior to your Lactate Threshold test, there are a few important things to note:

  • Do not exercise 24 hours prior to your appointment.

  • Make sure you’re properly hydrated and nourished before the evaluation; though not a full training workout, you will be performing at progressive exercise intensities for 8-15 minutes

  • Do not eat a heavy meal for 2-3 hours prior to your appointment. Light snacks are acceptable if needed.

  • Wear the shoes you normally train in.

WHAT HAPPENS DURING THE APPOINTMENT?

The  test will be  done on a cycle ergometer, which is similar to a stationary bicycle. You will complete a short warm up. During the test, your blood pressure, heart rate, and heart activity will be monitored for safety. During this test, the intensity will gradually increase. Small blood samples will be taken periodically during your exercise. This is tolerated very well, and is no larger amount of blood taken than for a simple finger-prick for blood sugar testing. This should take somewhere between 10 and 20 minutes.

 HOW OFTEN SHOULD I TEST?

There is no set time frame that we recommend that our clients retest, but many like to retest throughout their training for endurance events. By performing several tests, they can see if their training is effective or if they need to make adjustments.
