GENERAL - FITNESS TESTING

+ What fitness and wellness tests can I do?

Fitnescity offers professional fitness testing services to clients ranging from casual gym goers to clinically overweight individuals and world-class professional athletes.

The assessments use clinical-grade equipment and range from body composition (DEXA and BOD POD) analysis to metabolic testing (RMR), and performance analysis (VO2 max and Lactate Threshold).

All of the tests are conducted in a clinical setting (with the presence of a physician, a clinical dietitian and/or a certified exercise physiologist).

+ How do I book a test?

Step 1: Book your appointment:

  • Go to the Fitnescity home page: https://www.fitnescity.com
  • Choose the location, test, date, and time that work for you.
  • Receive a confirmation email detailing your test date, time, and protocol.

Step 2: Visit a facility near you.

Step 3: Receive your results within one business day on your personalized Fitnescity profile.

+ What test should I do?

It depends on your goal!

If your goal is to get in shape or stay in shape, or you would like a general idea of your overall health, we recommend BOD POD, DEXA, or RMR testing.

If you are a runner or cyclist, or would like to test your aerobic fitness level, we suggest VO2 Max or Lactate Threshold.

If you are a strength trainer or looking to work on strength training, we recommend BOD POD, DEXA, or RMR testing.

+ Are the tests safe?

The tests are entirely safe. All of the tests are conducted in a clinical setting, with the presence of a physician, a clinical dietitian and/or a certified exercise physiologist.

+ Will you be offering other types of tests?

Yes, stay up to date on new tests: https://www.fitnescity.com/new-locations

+ What is the difference between the BOD POD and the DEXA?

The BOD POD test will provide you with your total body fat and fat-free mass measurements. The BOD POD does not provide body fat levels by body part.

The DEXA body composition measurement technology provides far more complete and precise information than any other weight and body fat assessment tool. The DEXA Scan provides data on total body fat percentage, total fat mass and fat-free mass, regional body fat results (trunk, arms, legs, pelvis and android/gynoid regions), along with bone density.

+ Should I do the BOD POD test or the DEXA Scan?

Both tests will provide you with useful information. The test you choose will depend on your interests and goals.

If you are interested in learning about your general body fat and fat-free mass measurements, the BOD POD test may provide you with enough information.

If you are interested in more in-depth measurements, which include body fat percentage by body part, bone density, and how you compare to others your age and ethnic group, the DEXA Scan may be for you.

DEXA FAQs

+ What are the benefits?

Accurate measurement of body composition provides valuable information for assessing and monitoring the human body. Most people are used to stepping on a scale now and then. Yet monitoring weight – while helpful – is not a precise way of assessing health and fitness progress. Body composition measurement with dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry (DXA) can look beyond weight and the traditional body mass index (BMI) to determine body fat distribution. This can help individuals, trainers and physicians monitor the effects of diet and exercise in a precise manner. Precise, accurate and segmental (regional) body fat data can have many benefits such as: Supporting decisions on training regimens and nutrition plans. Understanding and monitoring health risks related to body fat distribution and bone density. Moreover, the measurements are fast and non-invasive.

+ What does this test measure?

-Regional body fat results · Body composition scans with DEXA / DXA provides precise and accurate data on total body fat percentage, total fat mass and fat-free mass. Most importantly, what is unique about DEXA body composition technology is that it provides regional body fat results (trunk, arms, legs, pelvis and android/gynoid regions). For instance, DEXA scans can give a precise measurement of visceral fat / abdominal fat. · Abdominal, or visceral, fat is of particular concern because it's a key player in a variety of health problems — much more so than subcutaneous fat, the kind you can grasp with your hand. Visceral fat, on the other hand, lies out of reach, deep within the abdominal cavity, where it pads the spaces between our abdominal organs. · Visceral fat has been linked to metabolic disturbances and increased risk for cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes. In women, it is also associated with breast cancer and the need for gallbladder surgery.

-Bone Density (bone mineral density - BMD).

Please note that DEXA scans do subject you to small amounts of radiation. A whole-body scan produces a level of radiation equivalent to flying by airplane from New York to California.

+ What happens during the test?

The DEXA Scan is a quick and painless process. Before the scan begins, you will be asked to lie down on an open, flat X-ray table. There are no special preparations required and you will be able to remain fully clothed. You will, however, need to remove any clothes with metal or hard plastic such as zippers, buckles or hooks. During the scan, a scanning arm will be passed over your body.

The appointment includes a short consultation with a physician who will help you better understand your results.

+ How long does the testing process take?

You will be booked for a 45-minute time slot. The actual scan takes around ten minutes. The appointment includes a short consultation with a physician who will help you better understand your results.

+ How should I prepare for the test?

+ How do I prepare for the test?

Test protocol: Arrive metal/ hard plastic free or ready to change. This includes: No zippers, buttons, reflective materials, jewelry or watches, and no bras with clasps or underwire. No metal or hard plastic hair clips or pins. If you have metal in your body (such as a replaced joint or a pin in a bone), please inform us.

On the day of the test you may eat normally.

RMR FAQs

+ What are the benefits?

Purpose: The Resting Metabolic Rate (RMR) test is performed to estimate the amount of energy that your body burns in one day.

Why is this important: Whether your goal is to lose, gain, or maintain your weight, this information is extremely valuable for designing a personalized weight management program. Knowing the amount of energy you use at rest will help you better understand the amount of energy you need from food.

Your resting metabolic rate is influenced by your age, gender, the amount of body fat and muscle you have, the amount of exercise you do, your ethnicity, as well as by a number of environmental factors like smoking and climate. The duration of the test is about one hour.
