I just came back from an event by ABANA. While I spend on average 2-3 hours every day talking about what we do at Fitnescity, I rarely get the opportunity to speak about the vision behind our work, and why we're so passionate about this vision. Here’s the quick summary.

As a fitness enthusiast with a nutrition degree, I usually consider myself ‘healthy,’ feeling fit, confident, and mentally well. I choose nutrient, dense, local, seasonal and organic foods, go to the gym at least four times a week and train vigorously. I walk everywhere in New York City and I often try out different diet and fitness trends. However, recently, I’ve been feeling physically and mentally off track. I haven’t been sleeping and eating well. I’ve been tired and stressed all the time. I couldn’t find the motivation and the time to exercise.

The rise of wearables, food tracking apps, connected scales and smart apparel are all examples of a new culture of wellness (1) (2). For consumers, being healthy does not just mean ‘not sick’. It is becoming more of a daily pursuit, and self-collected data is a big part of it.

Lately we have added another word in our daily vocabulary. “Keto,” or “ketogenic,” to describe our diets. We have been hearing, reading and talking about it. The diet that has developed in 1920’s to treat children with epilepsy, today, has been used by everyone who wants to fit into smaller pants and lose fat, but how many of us know what this pop word really means?
Keto is for both “ketosis,” the normal metabolic process in which the body burns fat for energy because it does not have enough glucose; and “ketones” a build-up of acids that is made in the same process.

Have you ever offered people food and kindly been rejected by them because they’re doing “Intermittent Fasting?” Fasting? Sounds almost intimidating. However, in this diet you don’t have to specify the foods you eat or starve yourself, you just have to choose an eating window. In other words, you will be limiting your eating to a certain number of hours every day.
Intermittent fasting (IF) focuses on when you eat, rather than on what to eat.
